Student Quiz Bowl 2012 in Thailand

The BITEC Convention Center in Bangkok was the venue for over 800 Thai food science and technology students who attended the 10th Food Science and Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT) - Nestle Quiz Bowl competition on Saturday 16 June 2012. In total 59 universities each entered a team of four students who competed in a wide-ranging multiple choice quiz covering questions on food chemistry, food microbiology, food processing and engineering, and food hygiene and food laws. A panel of eminent professors was on hand to adjudicate if any queries or challenges were raised, but those setting the questions had done a thorough job and their services were not required.

  The victorious Kasetsart University team

The large and vocal crowd of student supporters, resplendent in their university uniforms, followed the progress of their teams as the first round ran until lunch time. After lunch, only the 16 leading teams participated, and late in the afternoon, the Kasetsart University team emerged victorious. This was not their first victory, and they were delighted to have headed off their close rival Chulalongkorn University who won the quiz bowl for the first five years of its existence. At the conclusion of an exciting and exhausting day, it was time for the students to return to their campuses, carrying with them generous quantities of the sponsor’s products. All vowed to return next year for another attempt to claim the title and do their university proud. Judging by the enthusiasm and commitment of the students, the food science and technology profession in Thailand will be in good hands in the years ahead.

FOOD FRAUD PREVENTION

John Spink, PhD
Summary
Food Fraud – and the focus on prevention – is an important and evolving food industry focus. Even though the vast majority of these incidents do not have a health hazard in some ways they are more dangerous because the substances and actions are unknown and untraceable.  The types of food fraud stretch the traditional role of food science and technology to include criminology, supply chain traceability and other control systems. The food authenticity and integrity testing will be the most complex actions and their value should be assessed in terms of the contribution to prevention. This Scientific Information Bulletin (SIB) presents an introduction, review of incidents, the fundamentals of prevention which then provide insight on the optimal role of Food Science and Technology.
See IUFoST SIBS below for the complete Food Fraud Prevention Scientific Information Bulletin.
