Supporting Country-driven Innovations and Agrifood Value Chains for Poverty and Hunger Reduction

According to the latest World Bank estimate, more than 1.3 billion people live in poverty, despite tremendous progress made in the past two decades. The number of undernourished people has even increased since the mid-1990s. Today nearly 1 billion people suffer from hunger. And “hidden hunger,” as micronutrient deficiencies are called, affects the lives of more than 2 billion people.

Does Biofuel Production Threaten Food Security

The world’s population is growing despite hunger and diseases which spread around the globe, it is anticipated that in 2050 more than 9 billion people have to share the limited resources which are necessary to meet all needs of humanity. According to the many forecasts it will be especially difficult to provide sufficient food, water and energy for a sustainable livelihood. In order to provide sufficient food to 9 billion people the food production has to be raised by 50% compared to the present level according to FAO data.

The Virtual Water and the Water Footprint Concepts

'Developed by T. Allen more than 15 years ago, the concept of ‘virtual water’ is now apparent in discussions across the main- stream media from television and radio, to newspapers and magazines. Virtual water is defined as the freshwater (from this point on simply “water”) required for the production of goods or service delivery. While virtual water is actually required for production, it can be said to be non-existent in the final product (apart from a negligibly small residual amount).

World Food Prize Laureate 2012 ̶ Dr Daniel Hillel

The 2012 World Food Prize was awarded on 18 October to Dr Daniel Hillel of Israel for his role in conceiving and implementing a radically new mode of bringing water to crops in arid and dry land regions - known as “micro-irrigation.” Dr. Hillel’s pioneering scientific work in Israel revolutionised food production, first in the Middle East, and then in other regions around the world over the past five decades. His work laid the foundation for maximising efficient water usage in agriculture, increasing crop yields, and minimising environmental degradation.

UK Royal Society Names Refrigeration Most Significant Invention in the History of Food and Drink

The Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, has named the fridge, pasteurised milk, and the tinplate can as the three most significant inventions in the history of food and drink. These relatively modern innovations outscored more ancient inventions including the fishing net, the plough, and the cork.

FOOD FRAUD PREVENTION

John Spink, PhD
Summary
Food Fraud – and the focus on prevention – is an important and evolving food industry focus. Even though the vast majority of these incidents do not have a health hazard in some ways they are more dangerous because the substances and actions are unknown and untraceable.  The types of food fraud stretch the traditional role of food science and technology to include criminology, supply chain traceability and other control systems. The food authenticity and integrity testing will be the most complex actions and their value should be assessed in terms of the contribution to prevention. This Scientific Information Bulletin (SIB) presents an introduction, review of incidents, the fundamentals of prevention which then provide insight on the optimal role of Food Science and Technology.
See IUFoST SIBS below for the complete Food Fraud Prevention Scientific Information Bulletin.
