That's going to be a game changer for C300 mkII shooters. We ended up buying an EgoDisk 256gb Cfast card for our 1DX mkII, as well as to have when we rent a C200 again. UHD at up to 60p. I believe the form factor is preferable to the FS7 because you can easily rig it up to be a shoulder cam if you want but you cannot go backwards and rig an FS7 to be a small handheld. canon c200 raw vs canon c300 MK1 image wise. GH-5 lacks built in ND filters, XLR audio is not integrated, GH-5 AF is lacking, C200 has Canon’s DPAF with Face Tracking and works very well. With the C200, you have to be a lot more careful with getting everything right. Canon has made quite a few changes from the 100D across the body, some of which are more obvious than others. They are down-sampled from a full sensor readout and they look very nice at first glance. We generally prefer owning to renting cameras, because the rush to learn a camera, set it up properly, and become familiar with it before a shoot is a huge PITA. The C100 looks pretty bad when dealing with mixed fluorescent and tungsten interior lighting. Yes, the whole screen attachment was definitely improved over previous C cameras. Then the DR is better on 200. The Canon LM-V1 screen is a very attractive part of the C200. Are the shoots of Sebastian filmed with the c200 or a different camera? Not great, but hey, 4k/60, woohoo. They look rich, deep, and sharp. You can't set UHD 150mbps MP4 as your proxy resolution. I own a Red Scarlet W which I have just got but thinking of saving some money and getting the C200. It does 4k raw and has a good mp4 codec if i’m not mistaking. It looks like it’s almost in front of the lens. But, it would also eat bigger pieces off of the FS5, FS7, Ursa Mini, and the future EVA-1 market – the first three that have taken a large part of the pie. For me it opens up a lot of possibilities, mostly because of its low price and excellent all-round performance that delivers 12-bit RAW. You don’t need to say you can “literally” shoot any way you want. But the most exciting part of the C200, for us, is the new 4-inch screen. The Cinema RAW Light format is a more lightweight version of its Cinema RAW format that captures Raw video data in files as little as 1/5th the size of a standard Cinema RAW file. It doesn’t on the C300 MKII, as far as I know. And we already had all the lenses we needed. No color checker, but maybe I can upload a file. The camera has 2 SD slots, by the way. In this case, there was a lot of mix ups with Fedex and we ended up picking up the camera at 8pm the night before the shoot, took it back to our hotel room, and had a few hours to set it up, balance it on a Letus Helix Jr, and hope for the best. And yes, we know that we’re probably doing it all wrong, lighting the scene wrong, misjudging exposure, incorrectly setting the white balance, and using terrible lenses. In the meantime, ​we recommend renting only renting a C200B when you need it for dedicated use on a gimbal or remote jib/crane, or attached to a car. If you want to record UHD/4K to internal cards only, you can only choose the 4K RAW Light / 2K 35mbps Proxy combination, or shoot only to UHD 150mbps. For us, relying on only one Cfast slot for RAW capture is a huge limitation. Honestly, I find the price of this camera surprisingly low. Now there are 5 internal filters, which is a big deal. It’s billed as the gimbal version of the C200. I’ll likely get one. I don’t know unfortunately, but I’d prefer to use Cfast than a solution like this. The EOS 2000D is Canon’s latest entry-level model, replacing the similarly affordable EOS 1300D. The C200 meets our capture spec only when doing RAW capture. I think it is unlikely that the aliasing is firmware related, but it should be mentioned none the less. HD slow motion recording at 120fps | visible moiré pattern in the water. The footage was just so versatile and great to work with. The Mini URSA on the other hand, beautiful camera, the image is quite different than that of the Canon, I do like it, BUUUTTT its Heavy with lens and peripherals, Heaver that an Arri 35BL. Even though I’m not saying the Ursa Mini Pro is a bad camera at all. The EOS C300 mkI has had even longer legs than the C100. Disclaimer: At cinema5D we have tested almost every cinema camera on the market. As such, if RAW is not used to its full potential, it may not be beneficial to many users like documentary and event shooters, for whom RAW alone may not be a good selling point. I’m guessing a C400 will be released in a year or two to replace the C300 MK II and we will get all the goodies in the C200 along with all the delicious codecs of the C300 MK II. I could literally shoot any way I wanted, I didn’t even have to expose correctly. Plus, it’s powered by the camera, so there are no batteries to deal with. This gives you a lot of flexibility and a range of up to 10 stops of ND filtration. The Canon EOS R ecosystem is pretty new. And finally, the best part about the C200 on a gimbal is you don’t need to achieve perfect balance. It's no secret that we're big fans of Canon Cinema EOS cameras here at Digital Filmmaker. I come from stills, so call it lazy, but I’ve always wanted more flex and more range in what I shoot, it allows me to shoot faster and freer while on set or location, knowing I have more latitude. It offers amazing high quality RAW recording, just barely passable 4K capture, low quality HD . Also new is support for Canon's Cinema RAW Light format, which Canon first announced alongside the EOS C200. We shot both cameras in plain ol Clog, using the same settings across the board. so this means I could scrap my Atomos Ninja, work with the C200 in raw, and if/when I need to deliver Apple ProRes 422 files, this camera would be fine? S35 sensor, but do anyone know if the crop factor is 1.4 or 1.6? Add to that the fact that this camera offers the best auto focus any cinema camera currently has to offer, face detection, the convenient focus assist feature, great low-light qualities and a rugged, reliable, ergonomic body with up to 10 stops of built-in ND. That’s the advantage of sticking to a brand of cameras - we’re sure it’s the same for Sony owner/operators who have to rent cameras without much lead time. I came to all of these cameras from the my BVWD-600, then DBeta, then the Sony F900, then original Varicam and then began to downsize to smaller shoulder mount cameras as I had to travel a lot more, like the HPX300 but I never warmed to 1/3″ sensors. For this C200 review I spent a couple of hours putting the new camera through the elements, ranging from harsh sunlight, to strong wind and eventually pouring rain. Please note: The camera tested was still on a beta firmware. I was told that Adobe apps will support CRM natively in the near future too. and nothing in between. The C200 button layout is similar to the C100 and C300. Canon has always had a good menu structure. Is this a game of protecting higher end cameras like the C300 mkII? Note that this is not a scientific test. And in a surprise move, Canon has recently updated firmware to enable this monitor to work fully on the C300 mkII. Raising ISO is always a quality loss, no matter if you do it in a RAW tool or on the camera. Oh, about that one. But won’t deliver in them.Glad to reed the review, very helpful! The only downside of the C300II is that it’s bulky - too big to comfortably use on a gimbal, to heavy to handhold very long, and too much camera for many of the tripods, shoulder rigs, and accessories that DSLR and small cinema camera shooters have lying around. So far there hadn’t been any confirmation from other users that a C200 would even fit on a Helix Jr, so we weren’t entirely sure it would even work. Slow motion in 120fps works very well too. As you can see, it had lots of thick leaves, while in the open, the midday sun was burning down. Still, keep in mind that this C200 review reflects my subjective opinion, derived from my own experience and shooting style. If there was a guarantee, we’d all pay whatever we had to pay, for dependability. The  Canon EVF-V70 would probably be a great solution, but is a bit pricey. But the holy grail of this camera is internal RAW recording. But for many shooters, ergonomics and reliability is another key aspect when it comes to evaluating a camera. You can shoot in RAW Light and fix all the mistakes in post. But sadly, you now have to carry around a big AC adapter, which kind of makes the size change moot. The C200 uses the same batteries as the C300 mkII, which is great if you shoot with both cameras. This is a really great way to assign your ISO adjustment. In the meantime, if you want to buy the longer 39-inch version of the cable, it'll cost you.​. Luckily, there’s a Proxy recording on the SD, which has saved our bacon a few times on our C300II shoots. Five quality ND filters could cost you over $1000, in one diameter size and ND strength alone, for just a portion of your lenses. On paper, the Canon EOS C200 seems to solve everything a lot of the problems that have prevented DSLR and C100 users from moving to the C300 mkII. And we already had all the lenses we needed. That’s perhaps one benefit to using the C200 on narrative shoots, with the RAW Light codec, as opposed to tackling IR issues on a RED or Black Magic camera. There are lots of ways to rig the C200 monitor and microphone, and that’s what’s exciting about it is you can use pieces of gear you already have lying around. I would assume that the 256gb should work just as well. Yes, the C500 has been available for years and offers 4k external capture, but until recently it's been prohibitively expensive for everyday filmmakers. Of course, with the promised XF-AVC implementation in February, it will make this camera that much more interesting for many users, even if the rumors of it being only 8-Bit are true. But you can change all the values (white balance etc…) in Da Vinci or you still need Cinema RAW Development ? Whether it's the higher original resolution showing the benefits of oversampling or improved image processing, there is a distinct and noticeable step up in imagery with the C200. If Canon weren’t so concerned about hurting their own products, they’d realize that they could dominate the sub $10k cinema camera market with their colors, autofocus, usability, and professional service – all of which are leaps ahead of Sony and Panasonic. Why not just download the .CRM file and do all of the transcoding when you get back to the office and wrap shooting? The touch screen is not bright enough for outdoors, I mostly likely would use it with some sort of additional high bright monitor. Argh. When you are recording raw, are you seeing straight forward image? Currently the Cinema RAW Development tool by Canon lets you set white balance, Color Space and Gamma. However, the C200 doesn't currently support RAW output onto an external recorder. RAW comes from sensor without any post processing, so it should be sharper than the already processed C-Log. But even though it came with an advanced 4K CMOS sensor, its output HD bitrate and codec was a little low for broadcast and feature documentary use. Little money? But EgoDisk, a newer company, also insists that the popular Lexar Cfast readers are inherently bad and will corrupt your Cfast cards. It has a 1-inch CMOS sensor, which is not vastly different than the C300's APS-C CMOS sensor. In addition to the color difference, the C200 image looks so much flatter and deader than the very lively and three-dimensional C300II image. The FS7 is better suited for reality TV than the C200. Sorry Dan, that was a first minute mistake, has been corrected. Canon C200 Review – The Shooting Experience RAW was what most people were interested in regarding the Canon C200. The Canon C200 made a significant departure from the C100 in its modularity. Sebastian, thanks for answering so many of the comments. When the Canon C200 was announced, we did a little happy dance. Overall, I had a great experience shooting with the Canon C200. if no firmware update comes to us, i have to wonder how would canon justify the 5K price gap. We’ve used a Fader ND for years but the color, vignetting, and image softnening are a major disappointment. The problem was, the C200 monitor and hand grip was left on the gimbal back by interview setup. One of the noticeable differences is the material used around the handgrip. The Canon C200 comes in an alternative package, called the C200B, which is built without an EVF in order to be more compact for gimbal and remote use, and to be paired with custom accessories. What … Canon is smart at giving that entire market something to consider with the EOS C200, especially because there are many up and coming filmmakers who are buying into one camera system that they’re using for all kinds of work, including narratives, music videos, documentaries, web series, commercials, and so on. Which is a big deal if you’re shooting commercials. So now we have to transcode all the media to Proxy because the interview clips are slowing the workflow down. While the EVA1 is still a bit of a mystery as not even a single frame of footage has been shown to the public, the C200 is about to start shipping. From this review it looks like it’s finally here. To protect the C300 mkII, to make room for a C100 mkIII, and so on. The main barrier to using RAW light today (not just on a Canon C200), is simply the recording medium and processing requirements, both of which can change very quickly. All the best, Seb. There is HDMI and SDI out and, contrary to some rumours out there, I can confirm that both of them output your Canon Log signal. Finally, and this point is important to consider. We white is clipping fairly quickly and the roll off isn’t that great. At first I did not expect full-fledged RAW quality. I shoot a lot of TV shows with all types of cameras, and by far the form factor on the canon is the worst. Taylor the cable ‘slack’ clips into the monitor attachment so it’s not in the way at all. Unfortunately, I noticed a bit of aliasing and moire in the slow motion footage, where it often became visible in contrasty areas with fine lines. Depends on your project needs. I’m just wondering if you are seeing a normal fully saturated image and not a version of a log. One not so great part of the Canon C200 is the placement of the HDMI out, as well as the monitor cable connection. More recently, several C200 owners have reported success with the new DJI Ronin-S gimbal. For a cable that is very rigid, and expensive enough that you really don't want to twist it too much, the front of the camera body is a terrible place for the cable terminal. I don’t think it’s really designed and targeted for the broadcast TV crowd. This is a great feature that Canon introduced with the Canon C300 mark II. As I said at the beginning, it is really hard for me not to like the Canon C200. Also in terms of overall built quality and ergonomics it is still a separate class. I had a chance to mess around with it at Canon Burbank and it is delightful. Not only are internal NDs a thousand times more convenient, and less likely to affect the image negatively, they also save you a lot of money. The C200 has been designed to be broken down to a completely bare-bones package for something like drone or gimbal work. Say what? It’s pretty stiff. But then the specs were revealed, and we all felt a wave of confusion. So theoretically, the images should look nearly identical. First, I converted the Canon C200 CRM files (which are single files by the way, not photo sequences) into Apple ProRes 4444, so I had a format I could easily work with. Oh and it doesn’t do 4k at 60fps. But to get a match between the cams u need to shoot crop_rec with ML. You’re typically dialing in audio levels blind, or you’re standing on a stool. Will wait for Canon’s approval on this one. Now that the XLR inputs aren’t paired with the LCD screen like on the C300 - you can make the C200 a much more compact and modular camera. In the event of a failure, is it the camera at fault? BUT, From you Opinion does c200 stands just as well? I had it enabled for most of the shots with the Canon 100mm F/2.8 L Macro Lens that I used for this C200 review. The other part of the RAW Light equation is the Cfast media, which is still prohibitively expensive. Nice review Sebastian. Cinema5D your price was correct it was Canon’s mistake. But we insist on things like 6K, 12 bit, and RAW capture, even though our monitors (and eyes) can’t possibly tell the difference. Did you shoot in Raw or the regular codecs? Well, 4K RAW in a camera that costs $6,000 sounds great, and the fact that it can shoot up 60p RAW and up to 120fps in HD is very useful. Can it record 10 bit 422 non raw to an external recorder? Over the air TVs are still broadcasting in 720p Rec 709 by the way, so theoretically none of us have needed to upgrade our equipment for over a dozen years. I was able to adjust the exposure of the small test clips they had on the machine. How would this work for a space-saving workaround? And indeed, the RAW from the C200 is similar to the RAW from the 5D3 ML, which I’ve also worked with. I see from your article that Canon recommends the Sandisk cards, but you also mentioned that you used Transcend – which are about half the price of Sandisk…also do you know if there is any reason why I can’t put a 256gb cfast card in there? Nevertheless, I’ll run you through all the pros and cons I found. As other reviewers have noted, the C200's HDMI connection happens to be right in the way of where your hand will typically rest. If you want to convert part or all of your business to video/cinema shooting, the C200 will make more sense as a professional tool although it costs more. But when for the same price you can get a Sony FS7 that has a more “manageable” recording system and IMO has much more DR, doesn’t make this camera to appealing. Maybe someone with more knowledge about WB in Resolve can chime in here. Gimbals like the Helix Jr and the popular DJI Ronin M are certainly up to the challenge of carrying a C200. By the looks of it you can remove the cable out of the viewfinder? :-). But the Canon C200 is a game changer in that regard, and a clear sign that will challenge the competition. This is extremely handy and lets you work with shallow depth of field even in very bright sunlight without the need for an external filter. Not having to question 4k capture means you no longer have to worry about how to respond to clients when they ask for 4k, especially for very long productions where it seems wasteful and unnecessary. So many production houses jumped from Canon to Sony based on specs and now we’re stuck with a glut of of shows with pasty skin tones and AWOL colors (see most anything on Vice TV). The majority of owners will simply shoot UHD 150mpbs as the base resolution, without having to ask themselves if the resolution is worth the media space and processing power. Lexar ones are capable of 512GB, but it seems that they are not advised by Canon. A package offering the features, ergonomics, service and quality that Canon is known for are all very convincing arguments that make this camera a no-brainer for many filmmakers. The top of the body has two 1/4-20” threads, so you can decide whether to place it closer to the front or back of the camera. There are HDMI and SDI outputs, and it uses the same batteries as the C300 mkII but comes with a more portable single battery charger.
